Minimalism on the WWW

This homepage has seen some changes over the years.

It was first delivered by my Nokia N900 smartphone. Using the smartphone as a web server accessible over the Internet was the slightly deranged notion that got me started making a homepage again. I don't know why certain types of dumb ideas are so appealing to me, and I've stopped asking. If you want to read more about my adventures with the N900, there is a blog entry about it.

Next, the site lived on a Raspberry Pi 4. This meant I had an up-to-date version of Linux and could install Perl modules. I then wrote an itsy-bitsy content management system for the site, which it still runs on. I've put it on GitHub. I actually used to be product manager at a software company making a very competent and scalable web content management system. They'd be proud, I'm sure. (One of our top clients was WorldCom. For a while...)

Today the server is an Intel NUC sitting under my tv. It also hosts my Emacs-based note-taking system "ONote" that I've written about here. That thing has kept evolving, too.

I've used a 10.1" eMachine EM350 netbook (remember those?) from 2010 to do much of the work on this site. That started as a novelty, but has proven really convenient (especially with its brand new ~12-hour battery).

This whole web site is of course a novelty, a trip back to the technology of the 90's for me, and a bit of nerdy fun.

(By the way, you're accessing this site through my home network router, which might occasionally be assigned a new IP address by my ISP, in which case the site will be down until the server sends me a notification and I can change the DNS settings. But, there's nothing mission critical going on here, so...)
